What Is Spaying & Neutering?
Spaying or Neutering are two common medical procedures designed to limit the ability of cats to reproduce. Spaying is performed on female cats and includes the removal of the ovaries and uterus, which prevents a female cat from becoming pregnant. A neuter is performed on a male cat and removes the testes, reducing hormone driven behaviors such as roaming, spraying and aggression. Both procedures use a general anesthetic to minimize discomfort during surgery.
Our trained staff at Modern Vet utilizes advanced technology along with state-of-the-art monitoring devices to provide each feline patient with superior care prior to, during, and after the procedure.

When is the right time to
spay or neuter your cat?
Vets generally recommend spaying or neutering around puberty, typically at 5 to 6 months, although early age and adult procedures can also be safe options.
Your Cat’s Surgery: A Guide for Pet Parents
You’ll want to know about surgical processes so you won’t worry on your cat’s surgery day!
Your veterinarian will perform a complete physical examination and run blood work to make sure your cat is healthy enough for anesthesia.
Your veterinarian may decide whether to do the procedure traditionally (spay/neuter) or if the case is suitable for laparoscopic spay (a minimally invasive surgery using small incisions and a camera).
The night before surgery, you’ll receive instructions regarding fasting, i.e., no eating before surgery; this ensures safe anesthesia and proper preparation for your cat.
Your cat is put into general anesthesia and continually monitored by your veterinary team. Pre-surgical pain control is administered and continued post-operatively, utilizing current multi-step methods.
For male cats, during the spay/neuter process, each testis is removed through a small incision. In female cats, both ovaries (often along with her uterus) are removed either through a standard or laparoscopically minimally invasive method.
Both types of surgeries utilize minimal incisions and precise technique to minimize tissue trauma, resulting in a shorter, less painful recovery for your cat.
Most cats recover quite well from a typical spay, neuter or laparoscopic procedures. After surgery your cat will be constantly monitored by your veterinarian until he/she is completely awake.
Most cats are discharged from the hospital the same day. When you arrive home, provide your cat with plenty of rest, limit their ability to jump or run, monitor your cat’s incision area daily and keep your cat from licking their incision by placing an Elizabethan collar around its neck.
Light feeding is often suggested immediately after surgery to aid in reducing nausea and promote overall recovery.
Males typically recover within 1 to 2 days; however may still need to be somewhat restricted in their activities. Females will take a bit longer to recover from their abdominal surgery, yet will begin to show signs of improvement within several days.
The total healing period of the incision site will depend upon the type of surgical procedure your cat underwent (laparoscopic or standard); complete healing will occur within approximately 10 to 14 days.
