What Is Spaying & Neutering?
Spaying and neutering are two common veterinary medical treatments which eliminate a dog’s ability to reproduce. Depending on your dog’s gender, one of these treatments will be used. Both treatments also offer additional advantages concerning the future health and behavior of your pet. Spaying removes the ovaries and uterus of a female dog (thus eliminating her ability to enter into heat or become pregnant), while neutering (also called castration) removes the testicles of a male dog (therefore eliminating his reproductive capability and helping to decrease some testosterone driven actions like roaming and marking).

Your Dog’s Surgery: A Guide for Pet Parents
Prior knowledge about the surgery reduces anxiety for both pets and owners; Modern Vet focuses on creating a safe, comforting environment and communicating clearly throughout all stages of care.
A full physical exam will be performed to verify that the pet is healthy enough for anesthesia. Blood work may also be ordered prior to surgery to determine if there are any underlying conditions which could be detrimental to surgery. Both of these examinations help in ensuring that the surgeon has adequate information to safely plan the surgery. Additionally, this is the ideal time to voice any questions or concerns regarding the procedure and assist in preparing the pet with confidence for their impending surgery.
The owner will be requested to arrive with the pet in the morning after an overnight fast. Prior to surgery, the pet will be prepared and made as comfortable as possible. The surgical technique involves removing the testicles (neutering) from males, and removing the ovaries and typically the uterus (spaying) from females to prevent breeding. Modern Vet utilizes a minimally invasive laparoscopic surgical method, using small incisions and laparoscopy, thereby reducing recovery time and minimizing tissue damage. Pain management and continuous monitoring of vital signs will be maintained.
Typically, post operative recovery takes approximately 10 to 14 days. After anesthesia, it is common for pets to exhibit mild sedation, decreased interest in food and water, and or decreased levels of activity for 24-48 hours. It is essential that the pet remains in a quiet, secure location with minimal stress. While pets should not be exposed to excessive stimulation, complete isolation is generally unnecessary. Comforting interaction, observation of behavior, and continued monitoring facilitate the most successful recovery physically and emotionally.
Restrictions on activity level must be strictly adhered to for 10 to 14 days. Running, jumping, and rough play of any kind must be avoided, and only short leash walk periods should be utilized to provide access to bathroom facilities. The incision site should be evaluated daily for evidence of redness, swelling, or discharge. To minimize licking at the site, an Elizabethan collar (E-Collar) or a recovery jacket can be applied. The incision site must remain clean and dry. Bathing or swimming should be avoided until the incision has fully healed. Successful completion of the above recommendations will result in a smooth, complication free recovery for the pet.
