What is a Wellness Exam?

A wellness exam is an all-inclusive examination of your pet’s overall health and condition. A wellness exam is performed on pets that appear to be healthy. This type of exam helps identify potential diseases or health issues that may not have been detected by you while your pet is at home.

Our veterinarians conduct an extensive examination of each patient to look for signs of disease, discomfort, or growth concerns. We believe that early intervention is the most effective way to address minor issues and prevent them from developing into major health concerns.

What Does a
Wellness Exam Include?

Although our Wellness Exams are tailored to each of your pets individual needs, such as their age, breed, lifestyle, and medical background, they generally include the following services:

Annual
Wellness Exams

A thorough head-to-toe examination, which will assess the pet’s teeth for tartar and gingivitis, their weight and body condition, ear and skin for signs of infection or parasites, the pet’s heart/lungs for murmurs, eyes for cataract formation, joints for arthritis, and abdominal masses/tenderness. Early detection is key to preventing many serious health problems.

Vaccinations &
Boosters

Review the vaccination history of your pet(s) and determine if a core vaccine or lifestyle vaccine is necessary at this time due to the age, lifestyle and travel habits of your pet(s). These vaccines help prevent rabies, parvovirus, distemper, leptospirosis, kennel cough and many other preventable contagious diseases throughout the year.

Parasite

prevention

Visual examination and skin scraping to detect flea, tick and mite infestations. Fecal tests to detect internal worms such as roundworms, hookworms, and tapeworms. Monthly preventatives will be prescribed to keep your pet, home and family safe from parasitic infestation.

Dental health
maintenance

An oral examination will help identify tartar build-up, gingivitis, and loose teeth, which may contribute to systemic health issues affecting organs like the heart and kidneys if left untreated. Recommendations for professional cleanings and home brushing will be made to help prevent dental disease which can affect your pet’s overall health.

Nutrition &
weight management

Your pet’s body condition score, current diet, treats, portion sizes, etc. will be assessed. A personalized nutrition plan will be created with recommendations for the proper food type and supplements to help control obesity, diabetes and arthritis.

Diagnostic screening
& lab work

Blood tests to evaluate liver and kidney function, diabetes, anemia, etc. Urinalysis to screen for utis and kidney disease. Fecal tests to find parasites. Blood tests for thyroid function and heartworm.

How Often Should Wellness
Exams Be Scheduled?

Our dermatology consultations follow a structured process to achieve accurate diagnosis, determine the underlying cause of your pet’s skin issue and implement a treatment plan to ensure the health of your pet’s skin and coat over time.

Puppies

and Kittens:

For the first several months, regular check-ups (usually every 3 – 4 weeks) are typically recommended so that we can assess your puppy or kitten’s weight gain and complete their vaccine series.

Adult Pets
(Under 7 Years):

The general recommendation is an annual wellness exam (once per year) for healthy adult dogs and cats.

Senior Pets
(7 Years and Older):

Two times a year (semi-annual wellness exams) are recommended for senior pets, as they are more likely to develop chronic health problems that can be better identified through early detection.

Pets with Chronic
or Serious Health Conditions:

Your veterinarian will recommend how often you should schedule exams, but in general, pets with chronic or serious health issues may need more frequent exams to monitor the status of their condition or treatment.

High Risk Breeds or Special Cases:

Dogs and cats that have a higher risk factor (due to breed or other characteristics) may require more customized exam schedules.

The Benefits of Regular
Wellness Exams

Regular pet visits to your veterinarian can also detect and treat diseases and health problems early, so that they will be healthier and live longer, at Modern Vet.

01
Early Detection of Diseases

Routine check-ups on your pet allow for identification of dental problems, heart murmur, infections or parasites before they become severe or life-threatening.

02
Prevention

Maintain vaccinations current, and provide parasite prevention/control and routine preventative health care for rabies, parvovirus, and heartworm.

03
Complete Body & Dental Examination

The complete body examination is done by checking the animal's teeth and gum health. Good dental health will help alleviate your pet's painful gums and tooth infections that will negatively impact the heart, kidneys and other vital organs.

04
Maintaining an Appropriate Weight & Diet

Check the pet's body weight and provide customized exercise/dietary programs to help the pet remain thin and maintain a healthy weight; this helps to reduce the risk of developing obesity related arthritis, diabetes, and heart disease.

05
Behavioral & Lifestyle Assessment

Assess if behavioral changes need to be made or if there are lifestyle aspects of the pet's life that require improvement. Many times, these behaviors relate to underlying health conditions that may have been identified through early intervention.

06
Tracking Your Pet's Long-Term Health Status

Create a baseline of your pet's health to track their age-related changes in their health status so you can develop long term care plans based on those changes.

07
Reduced Costs

Regular preventative care reduces the costs associated with emergency medical treatment by identifying potential health problems early and managing those health problems.
