Why does Veterinary
Physiotherapy Matter?

There are many musculoskeletal, neurologic, and post surgical conditions that can have a significant impact on your pet’s ability to move comfortably. Veterinary physiotherapy provides non-invasive treatment options to help improve your pet’s mobility, alleviate their pain, and enhance their long term health and well being.

The team at Modern Vet uses hands on therapies, custom developed exercise programs and state-of-the-art rehabilitation strategies to provide you with the best possible outcome for your pet.

Benefits of Veterinary Physiotherapy

01

Pain management and comfort

Physiotherapists use methods like massage, myofascial release, trigger point therapy and electrotherapy (such as TENS) to help alleviate muscle tightness and pain for pets suffering from arthritic pain or post surgical pain.

02

Restoration of movement and strength

Physiotherapists assist pets with flexibility through guided stretches, mobilization of joints and building muscle strength through exercise, therefore improving their ability to move with ease and confidence.

03

Recovery after surgery or injury

Physiotherapy assists in faster recovery by reducing swelling in injured areas and limiting the formation of scar tissue. It also assists in reactivating muscles that have atrophied during the recovery process, which in turn allows for an easier transition back into normal activities.

04

Neurological rehabilitation

Pets that suffer from nerve related conditions (IVDD, paralysis, degenerative diseases) may benefit from neurological rehabilitation. Physiotherapy supports neurological recovery by improving neuromuscular control, coordination, and functional movement patterns.

05

Injury Prevention & Long-Term Health

Physiotherapy is used to correct postures, gait abnormalities, and muscle imbalances, thereby supporting prevention of additional injuries in pets who are highly active or senior.

06

Quality of Life

Pain reduction, along with improved mobility, has allowed many pets to remain physically active, mentally sharp, and emotionally stable throughout the duration of their lives.

What Conditions Does Physiotherapy Help?

Many types of veterinary physiotherapy are prescribed by veterinarians to treat animals suffering from:

Chronic joint pain and osteoarthrosis

Hip dysplasia

Intervertebral disc disease (IVDD)

Post-operative rehabilitation or fracture recovery

Luxating patellas

Cruciate ligament injury

Muscle weakness or atrophy

Neurologic dysfunction due to either spinal cord injury or trauma

Obesity related mobility issues

Reduced mobility and stiffness associated with aging

Physiotherapy will help maintain your pet’s ability to move comfortably, safely and effectively and improve their quality of life.

How do we assess and treat your pet?

Each patient evaluated for physical therapy will receive a personalized evaluation before receiving treatment. The purpose of this evaluation is to provide the veterinarian with a comprehensive view of each animal’s health and mobility status.

Detailed Medical History

Reviewing your animal’s medical history (including previous conditions, surgeries, current medication use, behavioral changes, level of exercise etc.) allows us to develop a comprehensive plan and identify potential contributing factors to your pet’s condition.

Joint Mobility & Range
of Motion

Our assessments measure the range of motion of your animal’s joints. This allows us to determine the degree to which these joints have become stiffened or restricted and whether there are areas where pain or tension may be affecting normal function.

Gait & Movement Analysis

Examining how your dog moves (gait patterns) and performs functional activities (e.g. climbing stairs) provides valuable information about potential limitations or discomforts that may be present but not immediately apparent.

Palpation Assessment

Using our hands on palpatory technique, we can assess the musculoskeletal tissues (muscles, bones, cartilage, ligaments and tendons), to identify areas of inflammation, scarring, degeneration, atrophy, etc. and pinpoint the area(s) of discomfort or dysfunction.

Functional Performance Test

This test measures your animal’s ability to perform functional movements such as climbing stairs. It gives us a clear indication of what movements they are able to perform in their day-to-day environment.

Evaluation of Pain & Comfort Levels

Finally, we assess your animal’s response to different degrees of movement. This includes evaluating their level of pain and sensitivity. We adjust our physical therapy techniques based on this evaluation to ensure that your animal remains calm, relaxed and free from unnecessary stress throughout the entire process.
