Overview
Severity: Low
Life stage: All
Allergies are one of the most common health concerns in dogs. With year-round warmth, high humidity, frequent sandstorms and constant air conditioning, Dubai’s climate creates perfect conditions for exposure to allergens.
Dog allergies fall into three main categories. However, many dogs are affected by more than one category, and allergy symptoms overlap between them:
- Parasites: particularly fleas, which thrive all year round
- Food allergies: often triggered by dietary changes or the proteins in imported foods. Beef and dairy are the most common protein triggers, followed by chicken.
- Environmental allergies: Also called atopy, including desert dust, sand particles and indoor pollutants from air conditioning systems or smoking
Dogs of any breed or age can develop allergies, although certain breeds popular in Dubai are over-represented. Common symptoms include persistent itching, inflamed skin and discomfort, all of which can have a significant impact on quality of life. Although allergies can’t be cured, with the right veterinary guidance and consistent treatment, most dogs can still enjoy a comfortable life, even in Dubai’s demanding climate.
Symptoms of Allergies in Dogs
Primary symptoms:
- Intense itching: constant scratching, biting, licking or chewing
- Red, inflamed skin patches, particularly noticeable on hairless areas and on lighter-coloured dogs
- Raised spots, crusts and scabs that may appear infected
- Hair loss, creating bald patches
- Areas of thickened, darkened skin
Secondary complications:
- Recurrent ear infections that keep recurring: Dubai’s hot humid conditions allow bacteria to thrive
- Runny, watery eyes and sneezing
- Anal gland (scent) disease
- Bacterial infections in skin damaged by excessive scratching
The location and pattern of affected skin help identify likely causes:
- Flea allergies affect the skin along the back and base of the tail.
- Environmental allergies target paws, tummy, ears, axillae and inner thighs.
- Food allergies are similar to environmental ones, but may also include digestive symptoms, such as vomiting or diarrhoea.
Risk factors for allergies in dogs
Climate-related risks:
- High humidity promotes the growth of mould and dust mites, both notorious allergens
- Air conditioning units circulate dust and pollen
- Dubai’s hot climate creates year-round parasite challenges
Breed predispositions:
- Environmental allergies: Labrador and Golden Retrievers, West Highland White Terriers, Bulldogs, Boxers, Bichon Frise, Shar Pei, German Shepherds and Pugs
- Food allergies: Labradors, West Highland White Terriers, French Bulldogs, Cocker Spaniels and Irish Setters
Dubai-specific factors:
- Sudden changes to imported dietary proteins can trigger sensitivities.
- Sand and dust particles irritate sensitive skin, particularly during Dubai’s frequent sandstorms.
- Indoor living, with constant air conditioning, is suspected to reduce the skin’s natural barrier functions, increasing vulnerability to irritants and allergens.
How vets diagnose allergies in dogs
Diagnosing allergies requires a thorough, step-by-step approach, especially when multiple environmental triggers overlap. Your vet may suggest:
- Blood and urine tests: To rule out underlying health conditions
- Skin examination: Examination of skin scrapes and sellotape lifts under a microscope to detect mites or other parasites
- Fungal cultures: Checking for yeast or ringworm infections (may take up to 3 weeks)
- Food allergy: Diagnosis requires a strict 6-8 week dietary trial, using a special hydrolysed (allergen-free) or novel protein diet, and feeding no other food types or treats.
- Specialised tests: Blood tests and specialised skin tests may help to identify specific allergens, including those common in the UAE.
What treatments are available for allergies in dogs?
Recommended general products
- Skin supplements: High-quality omega-3 fatty acids boost skin barrier function, helping to protect the skin against harsh environmental conditions.
- Topical treatments: Medicated shampoos and mousses can help remove environmental allergens, improve coat condition and provide itch relief. Gentle ear cleaners prevent the buildup of yeast and infections in warm, humid conditions.
- Environmental management: HEPA air purifiers reduce indoor allergens – essential in Dubai homes where windows are kept closed year-round. Hypoallergenic bedding reduces the risk of contact allergies, but needs to withstand the frequent washing needed in a hot country.
Veterinary treatment for allergies
- Anti-itch medications: Modern treatments include oral (by mouth) medications, topical treatments, and injectable options for short-term or regular monthly use.
- Allergen-specific immunotherapy: Desensitising vaccines based on the results of specific allergy tests may provide long-term relief. They require commitment, and success is variable.
- Antibiotics and antifungal treatments: Treat secondary infections caused by scratching and self-trauma.
- Prescription parasite prevention: Year-round flea and tick prevention is essential where parasites remain active throughout the year.
Home care for dogs with allergies
There are measures that you can take at home that may not be sufficient in themselves to treat allergies, but they help reduce exposure to allergens and improve your dog’s comfort.
Daily care:
- Regular paw bathing after walks to remove irritant sand and allergens.
- Cool baths provide immediate relief and remove environmental particles.
Environmental modifications:
- Avoid going for walks when the pollen count is high.
- Keep to pavements on walks rather than grass, and rinse your dog’s coat after contact with grass.
- Vacuum and dust regularly.
- Avoid using scented household products and sprays, except for flea treatments.
Diet:
- Feed your dog a complete, high-quality diet suitable for Dubai’s climate. Premium brands offer specialised skin-care formulations with additional omega oil content.
How to reduce the risk of allergy flares in dogs
Parasite control:
- Stay up-to-date with parasite prevention all year round. There’s no ‘lower-risk season’ in Dubai’s climate.
- Treat every pet in the house with a safe, effective product for their species, size, and age.
- Treat the house. Household flea sprays kill and prevent fleas from breeding in carpets, sofas, and soft furnishings.
Environmental management:
- Clean bedding regularly, using non-biological products and wash temperatures of at least 40℃.
- Wash food bowls thoroughly after each meal to prevent bacteria and mould.
- Clean and replace collars and harnesses regularly.
- Dust and vacuum frequently to reduce the build-up of indoor allergens.
Grooming routine:
- Weekly brushing and skin checks help identify problems early.
- Grooming action stimulates skin health and boosts natural defences.
- Some dogs benefit from professional grooming.
Managing Dubai’s environmental challenges:
- Time activity carefully: Choose cooler times of the day for walks to prevent heat-related stress that can exacerbate allergic reactions.
- Avoid being outdoors during peak pollen times: Consider indoor alternatives for exercise and toileting during severe sandstorms (as advised by Dubai Municipality’s veterinary guidance).
When to worry
Seek help from a veterinarian promptly if your dog:
- Scratches excessively and persistently, preventing them from engaging in normal activities
- Develops large areas of hair loss or skin sores
- Is showing signs of pain from skin problems: reduced appetite, low mood, or restlessness
