Overview
Severity: Low
Life stage: All
Giardia is a tiny parasite that causes digestive upset in dogs, often leading to watery diarrhoea and discomfort. Any dog can be infected, but puppies and those with weaker immune systems are most at risk. Early diagnosis is key to effective treatment, preventing complications and reducing spread to other pets or people.
Dubai’s hot, humid climate allows giardia to survive longer, and popular parks, beaches, and communal pet areas increase exposure. Protect your dog by spotting symptoms early, seeking veterinary care promptly and practising strict hygiene. With proper treatment, most dogs recover well, though preventing reinfection requires ongoing vigilance.
What is giardia in dogs?
Giardia is a tiny, single-celled parasite that differs significantly from other common dog health threats like worms, bacteria or viruses.
- How it works: Giardia attaches to your dog’s intestinal wall, where it feeds and multiplies, causing the digestive condition known as giardiasis
- Who it affects: Giardia can infect dogs, cats, humans and other animals, making it a ‘zoonotic’ condition with potential for cross-species transmission
- Transmission risk: Strains affecting dogs usually differ from human ones, but crossover can occur
- Why it matters in Dubai: Many dogs socialise together in parks, beaches and boarding facilities, increasing the risk of exposure
How do dogs get giardiasis?
Your dog can contract giardia through several common pathways:
- Direct contact with infected faeces from other animals: The simplest transmission route.
- Environmental contamination: Dogs love rolling and playing in grass and soil. If these areas have been contaminated by infected animals, your pet can pick up the parasite on their fur and paws.
- Self-grooming: When dogs lick themselves clean after contact with contaminated surfaces. Even small amounts of contamination can lead to infection.
- Contaminated water sources: Puddles, irrigation channels or contaminated communal water bowls. Dubai’s warm climate helps preserve the parasite in these water sources.
What are the symptoms of giardia in dogs?
Giardiasis symptoms typically appear one to two weeks after your dog becomes infected, and may vary depending on your pet’s age and immune defences.
- Watery, foul-smelling diarrhoea (sometimes with grey, slimy mucus)
- Excessive gas (flatulence) and bloating: possibly producing offensive smells
- Eating less or even refusing food
- Vomiting: may occur alongside the diarrhoea, though not in every case
- Dehydration: a particular concern in hot climates
Are some dogs more likely to suffer from giardia?
Although dogs of any age, sex or size can get giardia, certain factors increase the risk.
- Puppies and young dogs: immature immune defenses to parasites.
- Dogs with weakened immune systems: increased risk and potential severity.
- Older dogs: have fewer reserves and are more likely to suffer from other underlying health conditions that may affect their digestive system or overall immunity.
Some dogs carry giardia without showing obvious symptoms. But they can still infect other pets. This makes regular health checks particularly important in Dubai’s close-knit pet community.
Diagnosing giardia in dogs
Your vet examines fresh stool (poo) samples to identify the parasite or its cysts. Giardia is shed into stool intermittently, so a single sample may miss the infection.
How to collect a stool sample
- Use vet-provided containers (or clean plastic tubs/bags), take 2 scoops of fresh stool, and repeat for 3–5 days as advised.
- Wear gloves or wash hands well after handling.
- Label each sample, keep sealed in the fridge, and separate from food.
Veterinary testing is essential:
- Stool (faecal) testing: multiple samples over 3–5 days increase accuracy.
- Antigen ‘snap tests’: a reliable test to detect giardia proteins, often providing same-day results.
Treatment for giardia in dogs
Treating giardia requires a comprehensive approach that combines medication, nutritional support and strict hygiene. Specific treatment depends on your dog’s symptoms and overall health.
Medication
- Fenbendazole: a safe, commonly prescribed dewormer
- Metronidazole: an antibiotic that also fights gut parasites
- Often used together for best results
Dietary support
- Specialised prescription digestive diets: ease digestion, help firm up stools and provide balanced nutrition for recovery
- Probiotics: restore healthy gut bacteria and boost natural defences and support longer-term recovery from diarrhoea
Duration
- Most treatments last at least 2 weeks: strict adherence to directions and consistency are essential
Hydration
- Ensure fresh filtered or bottled water is always available, especially in Dubai’s hot climate
Follow-up
- Your vet will usually advise testing a stool sample for Giardia at the end of treatment and 2-4 weeks afterwards to confirm the infection is cleared
How to support a dog with giardia at home
Giardia cysts survive well in Dubai’s warm, humid environments, so strict home hygiene is essential to prevent reinfection.
Indoor cleaning
- Use regular household disinfectants daily: consistency is paramount
- Focus on your dog’s resting and play areas, wherever they spend most time
- Pick up and dispose of faeces immediately
Outdoor areas
- Dubai’s strong sunlight will help kill cysts on grass and soil, but the process takes time
- For balconies, patios, or concrete surfaces: scrub first, then disinfect
Bathing
- Bathe your dog regularly during treatment. Bathing removes faecal (stool) contamination and giardia cysts from fur
- Give a full bath on the final day of medication
- Particular relevance in Dubai: Dogs spend significant time outdoors and may carry contaminants inside with them
How to prevent and control giardia in dogs
Medication is non-negotiable
- Never skip or delay prescribed doses
- Incomplete treatment can cause persistent infection and drug resistance
Daily cleaning is essential
- Clean floors, pet bedding, toys, food, and water bowls, and any items your dog has contact with
- Continue this intensive cleaning for several days after completing the medication
Outdoor hygiene matters – especially in Dubai
- Regularly clean patios, balconies and outdoor areas your dog uses
- Prevent access to communal water sources: irrigation channels, puddles, standing water
- Restrict visits to dog beaches and parks during treatment to avoid reinfection and protect other pets
Can your dog pass giardia to family members and other pets?
The risk of transmission from dogs to humans is relatively low because the type of giardia that dogs usually get is different from the one that infects humans. But there can be some crossover, so it’s important to stay careful.
Key precautions
- Wash your hands thoroughly after handling cats or cleaning litter boxes
- Extra care around young children, the elderly or immunocompromised people
- Maintain strict hygiene in smaller apartment spaces
Canine housemates
- Test all dogs in the household if one is infected
- Your vet may well advise treating all in-contact dogs to prevent cycles of re-infection
When to worry about your dog with giardia
Seek immediate veterinary attention if your dog shows:
- Persistent vomiting and diarrhoea, with lethargy, weakness
- Abdominal bloating or distension
- Significant blood in stool for more than 24 hours
- Signs of pain: hunched posture, reluctance to move, restlessness, vocalisation when touched
- Dehydration: dry gums, poor skin elasticity, rapid breathing
- Poor response to treatment
